Helping prisoners re-socialize and build their entrepreneurship skills

The business planning training course will be arranged for 70 female and male prisoners in Nurek and Yavan prisons. The trainings will help build entrepreneurial skills of prisoners, and prepare them to independently create business ideas, and develop business plans. Training participants, who have previously attended vocational courses, will learn how to build up new businesses and learn requirements of local taxation legislation. It will give prisoners opportunities to start earning their own income, which ultimately will help them re-socialize in society and continue their lives obeying the laws and public order.

Hand out materials are being prepared based on business-plans templates of relevant organizations providing grants and loans (for instance, Committee of Women and Family Affairs under the Government of RT, and the Labour and Employment Agency of the Ministry of Labour, Migration and Employment of the Population of the Republic of Tajikistan) so that imprisoned women and men can practice developing business plans.

The results of completed vocational courses in Nurek and Yavan prisons showed prisoners’ high interest to participate in project activities, particularly related to business planning and project design.

Trainers will adapt their curricula considering respective regimes in penitentiary institutions.  In addition, all precautions for contamination of COVID-19 (masks, antiseptics and social distancing) will be observed.

Trainings are being arranged by NGO “Jahon” in cooperation with the Institute for International Cooperation of the German Adult Education Association (DVV International) in Tajikistan, within the framework of the project "Promoting Access to Social, Economic, and Cultural Rights to Prisoners and Ex-Prisoners in Tajikistan" (SECRET-3) funded by the European Union and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. The project is implemented by the Country Office of DVV International in Tajikistan in partnership with local Public Organizations: “Bureau on Human Rights and Rule of Law” (BHR) and NGO “Jahon”.
