The ceremonial opening of the DVV International Regional Office for South Asia in Colombo was a vibrant celebration of education, collaboration, and innovation in adult and lifelong learning. The event brought together distinguished dignitaries, partners, and stakeholders from government, international agencies, and civil society, all gathered to witness the formal inauguration of the regional hub.
The ceremony began with the traditional lighting of the oil lamp, accompanied by a captivating cultural performance that set the tone for a day of inspiration. A video message from Esther Hirsch, Director of DVV International Germany, and Meike Woller, Senior Desk Officer and Regional Representative for South and Central Asia, underlined the global commitment to fostering inclusive learning pathways.
Sonja Belete, Regional Director of DVV International South Asia, shared the organization’s strategic vision for the region. “Our aim is to connect communities, governments, and institutions, creating pathways that enable every individual to access quality learning throughout life,” she said.
His Excellency Dr. Felix Neumann, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, emphasized the importance of international cooperation. “Germany believes in the transformative power of lifelong learning. This regional office is a testament to our enduring partnership with Sri Lanka and South Asia,” he stated. The Guest of Honour, Mr. A.J.S.S. Edirisooriya, Additional Secretary at the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education, added, “This initiative strengthens our commitment to quality education and vocational training, opening doors for our youth and adult learners alike.”
The official launch of the DVV International website followed, providing an accessible platform to showcase the organization’s work in South Asia. The day concluded with an exhibition, partner experience sharing, and a networking brunch, fostering meaningful connections and collaborations.
Attendees included representatives from the 32 organisations including German Embassy of Sri Lanka and Maldives, Goethe-Institut Sri Lanka, DAAD, GIZ Sri Lanka, EU Integration Fund - MWND, AHK Sri Lanka, Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission, Vocational Training Authority, National Youth Services Council, UNESCO, and numerous NGOs, and educational institutions, reflecting a strong network of committed stakeholders.
The opening of the South Asia Regional Office marks a new chapter in creating sustainable pathways for lifelong learning, empowering communities, and strengthening international partnerships in education.
