Authorities at Zomba Central Prison have called the corporate world to assist its inmates rehabilitation programs, as over 2,000 inmates at the facility qualifies for the programme.
The prison's Officer Incharge, Deputy Commissioner Dr. Austin Nyoni, speaking on Wednesday at the facility during a graduation of 64 inmates trained in tailoring, carpentry, bricklaying, and barbering, said government alone cannot meet all the necessities all the time.
Dr. Nyoni, said they have an open door policy for those who want to assist, saying the trainings are effective as their data shows only one graduate from over 200 trained is back in prison after committing other offences again.
Center for Human Rights, Advice and Assistance - CHREAA and DVV International are supporting the rehabilitation programs, providing materials and other resources.
Timveni Kabichi from CHREAA said that the programme is changing inmates’ lives. On his part, DVV International Regional Director for Southern Africa, Johann Heilmann, praised the programme's substantial output.
