University of the Third Age

Project of ADRA Kyrgyzstan supported by DVV International

In April 2023 we launched an interesting educational project for adults. In this small pilot project, the ancient Kyrgyz craft of "kurak", the virtuosity of the trainer-designer Cholpon Alamanova, and... the place of strength and inspiration for pensioners in the last 27 years, ADRA Kyrgyzstan, harmoniously converged.

So, thanks to the support of DVV International, we have equipped a wonderful workshop: with brand-new sewing machines, and good irons, and bought a whole palette of multi-colored fabrics and accessories. Even sophisticated seamstresses would envy the equipment of the project's workshop. For example, we have wooden irons (Have you heard of this?), from the designer and craftsman Grigory Dzagoev. And for people with poor eyesight, special sewing needles allow you to thread the thread effortlessly.

Participants in the course on the production of patchwork quilts were recruited instantly. Twelve people, as the most disciplined students, are diligently, very enthusiastically mastering the secrets of kurak. Enrollment for master classes is also very active. Too bad it's not possible to accommodate everyone. We receive the warmest feedback from the participants for the opportunity to study in such good conditions. The dreams of our students are the most ambitious: to learn how to sew blankets, give and sell. As well, the participants of workshops on sewing handbags and key holders in the style of kurak are also going to monetize their new skills. At the traditional fair, which takes place on May 20, "From Heart to Heart", they have already sewn beautiful products in the national style. The next fair will take place on October 1st. So the effect of this project will be long-lasting. Come, you will see.

And here, what else is important to note, you should not treat the education of pensioners condescendingly. Learning is important throughout a person's life. But in adulthood, it becomes simply a necessity in order not to be left out of life. You need to be able to order medicine or water on the Internet and sign up for an electronic queue at the clinic. It would be nice for Grandma to be able to use Pinterest to knit trendy socks.

This project demonstrates their thirst for new knowledge. This knowledge improves the lives of older people: intellectual, material, and emotional. The lonely people, the widows, the weak, and the infirm have a powerful incentive, now they are students of the University of the Third Age.
