Форум Образования Взрослых

The Institute for International Cooperation of the German Adult Education Association (DVV International) conducted the Central Asian Adult Education Forum on the following topic: "Global Citizenship Education: Opportunities and Challenges for Central Asia”. In cooperation with UNESCO and including representatives from UNESCO offices in Bishkek, Almaty, and Tashkent, the Forum took place from 24 to 26 June at the shores of Lake Issyk Kul, in the ‘Royal Beach’ resort in the village of Chok Tal.

Presenting and discussing contents and formats of ‘Global Citizenship Education’ – a thematic sphere of work in the education sector seen by the organisers as having particular relevance for Central Asia today, the Forum had the following objectives:

  • To raise the awareness of education experts, practitioners, opinion- and decision-makers from Central Asian countries about the role of Global Citizenship Education in lifelong learning and achieving SDG4;
  • To increase understanding of successful practices from Asia and beyond in ALE, focused on GCED, and of developing respective curricula especially for the vulnerable groups of the population;
  • To discuss and jointly determine the relevance of GCED for ALE in Central Asia, and its applicability in the Central Asian context.
  • To advance the development of curricula and learning offers in Central Asia on GCED in conformity with the SDG 4;
  • To develop recommendations and roadmaps on strengthening the implementation of GCED within formal and non-formal education in Central Asian countries.

The Forum brought together international experts in global citizenship education from a total of 13 countries, including from the Republic of Korea, Mongolia, Germany, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Central Asia. The Forum's target group consisted mainly of representatives of non-governmental organisations from Central Asia, Eastern Europe and the Middle East. The group elaborated on the relevance of GCED in Central Asian countries’ contexts, working and planning potential future projects and adapted approaches. As a result, a policy brief on GCED in Central Asia will be developed together with UNESCO in the region, and agreed on with the participants of the Forum. Follow-up activities may also include future projects on Global Citizenship Education in cooperation with DVV International in the region.
